New York Requirements at a Glance

  • Every New York security guard must complete DCJS-approved training and register with the Department of State, Division of Licensing Services.
  • New guards complete the 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course before they can register and be assigned.
  • Applicants are fingerprinted for a criminal history background check.
  • The 16-Hour On-the-Job Training Course must be completed within 90 working days of employment.
  • The 8-Hour Annual In-Service Training Course is required every calendar year.
